Bronx Deli Celebrates 60 Years with Street Renaming & $1 Hotdogs

Bronx Deli Celebrates 60 Years with Street Renaming & $1 Hotdogs

PLEASE NOTE: THE CELEBRATION HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO STREET CONSTRUCTION. WE WILL SHARE NEW DATE ONCE WE KNOW.

In 1960, a 17-year-old boy used his Bar Mitzvah money and opened up a small Kosher Deli on West 231st St with his father. 60 years later, the family will be celebrating this Saturday June 15th with a street renaming.

Popular Bronx deli, Loeser’s Deli, is celebrating 60 years on Saturday, June 15. To commemorate the milestone, the New York City Council voted unanimously to rename the intersection of West 231st and Godwin Terrace as “Loeser’s Deli Place.”

Owner Fredy Loeser and his family will host a community event alongside local politicians and dignitaries to celebrate their customers loyalty. Hebrew National, the official kosher hot dog of Loeser’s Deli for the last 60 years, will offer guests “The 60 Special” featuring Hebrew National hot dog topped with pastrami and mustard for just $1.

When: Starting at 11:30am
Where: Loeser’s Deli, 214 W 231st St. Bronx, NY 10463

Hebrew National Kosher Beef Franks have been on the menu at Loeser’s since the beginning. The brand is helping Loeser’s celebrate their long-standing partnership with a special Hebrew National dog featuring Hebrew National pastrami and mustard, available on June 15 for $1.

“I’ve truly lived the American dream and am incredibly grateful to all of my long-time customers. I couldn’t be prouder that I’ve been able to put my four children through school by selling kosher deli to the community that I love,” Freddy Loeser, founder and owner, Loeser’s Kosher Deli.

With money saved from his bar mitzvah, Freddy Loeser focused on running the business while his father did the cooking. At the time, the deli catered to the borough’s large Orthodox and observant Jewish population with traditional favorites such as pastrami, corned beef, kosher hot dogs, brisket and knishes. These authentic foods are still on the menu today with the deli’s customers reflecting the multiculturalism of New York.

To say the south Bronx was dangerous in the 1970s would be an understatement. Officers in the 41st precinct had their hands full with the violent crimes that took place during that time period.

NYPD: Reputed mobster killed at Bronx McDonald's drive-thru

NYPD: Reputed mobster killed at Bronx McDonald's drive-thru

Police say a reputed mobster was killed while waiting in line at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the Bronx on Thursday night.

The incident was reported at the restaurant in the 1600 block of Webster Avenue just before 5 p.m.

Police said 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola was an alleged associate for the Bonanno family. He was waiting for his food inside his SUV when multiple shots were fired in what police believe was a hit.

This was not the first time he was targeted. Zottola survived a stabbing last December and was arrested earlier this year for firing at a man who pulled a gun on him outside his own Bronx home.

NYC playground shooting wounds 2, sends dozens scrambling

NYC playground shooting wounds 2, sends dozens scrambling

A brazen broad-daylight shooting at a Bronx playground left two people injured and sent dozens running for their lives, and the harrowing incident was caught on surveillance camera.

Now, police are hoping that video will lead to the arrests of two young men.

It happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday at Walton Park, located on the corner of East 181st Street and Walton Avenue in the Morrisania section.

Authorities say two unidentified individuals approached the basketball court, at which time one of them pulled out a firearm and shot numerous times at the people inside.

Street renamed for soldier who died saving lives in Bronx fire

Bronx street was renamed after a hero soldier who died saving four people’s lives in a Bronx fire that killed 12 in 2017.

Family, friends, and clergy gathered at the intersection of East 187th St. and Prospect Avenue to honor Pfc. Emmanuel Mensah, a 28-year-old immigrant from Ghana and a member of the Army National Guard, during the unveiling of “Private First Class Emmanuel Mensah Way.”

Five Suspects Found Guilty in Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz Murder Trial

Five Suspects Found Guilty in Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz Murder Trial

A jury found five of suspected gang members charged in the murder of Bronx teenager Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz guilty Friday afternoon, about a year after video of his killing sparked international outrage.

Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, Elvin Garcia, Manuel Rivera, Jose Muniz, and Jonaiki Martinez Estrella were found guilty of first- and second-degree murder, gang assault, and conspiracy in the second degree.

“A message is going through to people who see what happened with those killers: if they continue to [inflict] violence in the city, they are going to get the same thing,” Leandra Feliz, the victim’s mother, said at a news conference at Bronx Criminal Court.

“Everybody in the room was happy. Every single person that was inside the room was very happy,” a family member of Guzman-Feliz said, describing the atmosphere inside the courtroom when the verdict was announced.

Police said Guzman-Feliz was dragged out of the Cruz and Chiky bodega in the Belmont section of the Bronx by suspected gang members and attacked with machetes and knives on June 20, 2018. The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Prosecutors argued the men were members of the Trinitarios gang, on a mission to hurt rival gang members, and killed Guzman-Feliz in a case of mistaken identity.

Two of the suspects were seen smirking after the verdict was announced, and one looked at the audience and shouted “Hasta la muerte” (“Until I die”) as he was led out, an apparent yell of allegiance to the gang.

But that didn’t dampen the joy of supporters of Guzman-Feliz who sang and held banners reading “Justice For Junior” outside the courthouse.

The jury reached the verdict after less than two days of deliberations, during which jurors sent the judge six notes asking to see more evidence. They also asked to be informed of the testimony again and to see photo and video evidence of the killing. Kevin Alvarez and Michael Reyes, two of the men charged in the case, were cooperating witnesses in the case.

14 suspects were charged in the case overall. The other nine men will be tried at a later date.

All of the defendants have pleaded not guilty and face the possibility of life in prison without parole. The five convicted Friday are due back in court July 16.

Authorities said they made more than 70 felony arrests linked to the Trinitarios gang.

Guzman-Feliz was part the of the NYPD’s Explorers Program, a group for youths interested in a law enforcement career, and dreamed of becoming a police officer one day.

A security video of the attack that also showed the teenager being dragged out of the bodega was shared on social media, sparking outrage and leading to the hashtag #JusticeForJunior being picked up around the country. Some athletes and celebrities, including Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, rapper Cardi B, and singer Rihanna, also called for justice and expressed their condolences.
